Ken Kujala
Director Marine Operations, Hawaii Superferrys
Ken Kujala joined Hornblower Marine Services in 2003 aboard the Westpac
Express. He was the first Ships Master in the US to be type rated on an
unlimited tonnage high-speed vessel, and became one of the first US Coast
Guard approved type rating instructors and auditors.
In his position as Director of Marine Operations for the Hawaii Super Ferrys (HSF),
Ken will be responsible for the day-to-day management of the ferry's as well
as shore side management, food and beverage, and reservations. HSF will provide two new 107 Meter High Speed Vessels for the Hawaiin Islands, service to begin in 2007.
Ken’s experience in the marine services began when he was a corpsman
in the Navy, stationed at the Naval Regional Medical Center Philadelphia,
Pennsylvania, as an orthopedic technician aboard the Philadelphia Maritime
Museum’s tall ship Gazela Primerio.
This was followed by positions with the US Navy in their Naval Intelligence
Support Command in Washington, DC as an analyst and as a port captain,
then second officer on the cruise ship Veracruze for what would become
Royal Caribbean Cruises in Miami.
Ken worked on tankers for 11 years, eventually earning the Captain’s
position. Following the events of September 11, 2001, he went on extended
Naval reserve duty in Manhattan, serving as liaison between the US Navy
and the City of New York and also as operations director for the Navy’s
Fleet Week held in Manhattan, a ten day event that had 22 ships from 5
countries, 35,000 military members, and 2,200 different events.
He has been involved in the Navy between active duty and the reserves
from 1977 to the present, and currently holds the rank of Commander.
