The vessel is a roll-on-roll-off all aluminum construction with 40,000 horsepower and KaMeWa jet drives. It is chartered by the United States military to provide services to the United States Marines based in Okinawa, Japan, to transport military personnel and their equipment over a 1,200 mile range.

    On January 19, 2010, as activated by the Maritime Administration on a 90-day contract, Hornblower Marine Services was pushed into service aboard the Huakai, a high-speed catamaran to be used in assisting in the Haiti relief efforts from the January 12, 2010 earthquake.

    In June 2004, Hornblower Marine Services, Inc. signed a Marine Management Operating Agreement and Construction Oversight contract for the new Hawaii SuperFerry operation, an inter-island ferry service for passengers and vehicles to four islands in Hawaii.

    After five years of service in Hawaii, that agreement ended in April, 2009.

    In December, 2002, HMS-Wisconsin Inc. entered a four-year contract with Lake Express LLC to act as Owners' Representative for the construction and operation of this new high-speed catamaran built at Austal USA in Mobile, Ala.
    The contract with Lake Express LLC ended in March, 2007

    A high-speed ferry, the Spirit of Ontario commenced operations in the summer of 2004, on an international route from Rochester, N.Y. to Toronto, Canada.
    Ferry operations ended two months after being developed.

    This was one of the highest speed vessels in North America, operating an international route from Port Everglades, Fla. to Grand Bahama Island.

TSV, WestPac Express — Okinawa, Japan

HMS-WestPac Inc., a subsidiary of Hornblower Maine Services, entered into a contract with Austal Ships Pty Ltd. in December, 2002 to provide marine management and crew services for the WestPac Express.

This United States Military chartered high-speed, wave-piercing 101-meter catamaran can carry 970 passengers and up to 237 vehicles. It's sole mission is to transport personnel and their equipment over a 1,200 mile area of responsibility based out of Okinawa, Japan. The roll-on roll-off, all-aluminum vessel is powered by KaMeWa jet drives and has 40,000 horsepower with a top operating speed of thirty-seven knots.

HMS Haiti uses HSV Huakai for Haiti Relief — HMS Haiti

HMS Haiti

On January 19, 2010, as activated by the Maritime Administration on a 90-day contract, Hornblower Marine Services was pushed into service aboard the Huakai, a high-speed catamaran to be used in assisting in the Haiti relief efforts from the January 12, 2010 earthquake.

HMS crews deployed the vessel in just ten days and began transporting troops, supplies and goods to the people of Haiti.

Trinidad Water Taxi — Trinidad

In 2008, HMS Global Maritime signed a contract with the government of Trinidad (National Infrastructure Development Corporation Ltd. - NIDCO) to manage their "Water Taxi" ferry fleet. The service is vital to the region in in order to alleviate motor-vehicle traffic on the national roadways and to improve both community and business productivity.

Since our involvement in the service, we have helped Trinidad grow their fleet and service. Trinidad is awaiting arrival of three new catamarans from Austal, expanding their total fleet to seven vessels.   Specifications:

  • Three 27 meter High-Speed Ferries
  • 27 meter vessels operate under high-Speed Craft Code
  • One 45 meter High-Speed Ferry
  • Speed 35 knots

The vessel was reactivated by the Maritime Administration during the Haiti relief efforts. Alakai did not make a trip to Haiti.

Honolulu DOT - LEGACY — Honolulu, Hawaii

Formerly under contract with the City and County of Honolulu, HI, Hornblower Marine Services (HMS) was providing a turn-key passenger ferry service between West Oahu and Downtown Honolulu. Officially designated the Intra-Island Passenger Ferry Demonstration Project, this service illustrated how a water transit service consisting of two 149-passenger vessels helped mitigate the growing commuting problems for West Oahu area residents. The contract with the City and County ended in June, 2009.
